Rogue Amoeba releases free Ringtone Maker

Today brings a lovely treat from Rogue Amoeba, the makers of Audio Hijack Pro and Fission. They've posted MakeiPhoneRingtone, a free utility that converts any AAC file into an iTunes 7.4.27.4.1-compatible Ringtone. Drop the file onto its window and a second or two later, it appears in iTunes as a new ringtone. No file renaming, no special tricks. It just worked. I synced it over to my iPhone without any snags.
Of course, Rogue Amoeba hopes that you'll use its Fission editor to make those ringtones. If you're like me and prefer non-music-ringtones, its Audio Hijack Pro may be a better choice for recording sounds like a knock on the door or the most annoying ringtone ever made.

September 12 2007 at 1:40 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replywhen I drag ANY aac file to the app, I the following message:
An error occurred while processing "Import".
Error: Couldn't open.
Anyone have any ideas?
I just accidently stumbled upon an awesome tip. If you use an UNREGISTERED version of Fission, it will only save your files faded in and out. They mean for this to be a limitation that will compel you to buy the software, however it creates PERFECT ringtones. I picked a couple good techno tracks, and the way it fades in and out seriously makes the coolest ringtone effect.
This makes it sound way better than the crappy ringtones from the carriers. They just turn the music on and off which sounds horrible. Fading the sounds in and out is smooths it out and makes it much more appealing.
So, if you want make a good ringtone get Fission and use this tool. But dont register it or you'll lose this awesome fade in / fade out effect!
I can't drop the ACC file into this program, it does not do anything. Any advice?
